MY APPROACH
My approach is integrative meaning that, rather than working within one theoretical approach, I draw from a number of psychotherapy approaches. I work mainly from the approaches of Psychodynamic and Existential Psychotherapy and I am particularly influenced by Attachment Theory, which is my area of specialism.
I work in a ‘relational’ way which, simply put, means that I place a lot of value on the relationship that I have with each client as I view the therapeutic relationship itself as a tool for healing and growth. I therefore work to build a safe, trusting, and collaborative relationship with each client where you can explore your experiences and develop a deeper understanding of yourself, your relationships, and how you are in the world.
I see Psychotherapy as a valuable tool to:
Explore and process difficult or confusing feelings, experiences, and memories (both past and present)
Develop a deeper understanding of how and why you are how you are
Identify patterns in your life and relationships which may be causing you difficulty
Examine how you are with boundaries and work to change this if necessary
Increase your self-awareness
Increase your self-worth and build confidence
Find meaning, purpose, and direction in your life
The desired duration of therapy, the goals of therapy and the ways of working together can all be explored in the first session and also on an ongoing basis.
I believe psychotherapy is most effective when done regularly (perhaps a bit like going to the gym!). I therefore usually see each client on either a weekly or fortnightly basis, especially at the start of therapeutic work.
